Rebranding

I'm working on getting my logo I use on my business cards and presentations redesigned, partially in preparation for a business card update. I'm hoping to hire a graphic designer to do this redesign and am in the process of discussing the project with one whose work I find nice and creative/out of the box. I'm not going to restart my self-marketing campaign though, my days of self-promotion beyond what's needed to get work/get work done are over, I'm content with the reputation I have at the moment. I'll likely restart a campaign when I near graduation or soon thereafter, but I'm not looking for any work right now and within the groups that I traverse I'm generally satisfied with my standing.

I'll post the new logo here when it's finished. I do encourage personal branding for those of you who never got into the movement, it's important to sell yourself no matter what you're doing, just make sure to keep a level of humility about you--self-branding isn't about being the best, it is simply about gaining name recognition and you don't want your name to be recognized as an arrogant/conceited jackass. Self-branding should be just as much about having fun as it is about tooting your own horn. Your work should be what speaks to how good you are, not your branding efforts.

Comments:
Branding, really? While I think it's fun to look at your logo on the business card (which I *still* have in my wallet from summer '07 btw), I disagree about the whole idea of making your name recognizable. If there is something behind the name, it would get recognized even if it's written in Times New Roman 12pt ;)

I am a firm believer that many 'gurus' are only 'gurus' due to self-marketing--rehashing old ideas in books, giving talks, etc. That's not to say all gurus gained the status that way, some are really just 'that good', but a little bit of branding never hurt ;)

Really, I think it's fairly useful as a way of 'standing out' in a crowd of similarly qualified individuals--mostly a job market tip. I do it mostly because I think it's fun :)

Also, glad to hear you still have my card, that's at least one that didn't end up in the dustbin ;)
